Port Aransas golf cart rules

Street rules visitors ask about

• Golf carts are motor vehicles. Most Texas traffic laws apply, including seat belts, child seats, open containers, and DWI.
• Only a person with a valid operator's permit and/or driver's license may operate a golf cart on public streets.
• If you bring your own cart to Port Aransas, register it with the City and display a valid calendar-year plate.
• Do not operate a golf cart on Highway 361 south of the Avenue G intersection. Cross only at the legal crossings on the city's Hwy 361 map.
• Streets posted over 35 mph are off-limits except a straight-across legal crossing.
• Move right and yield to faster traffic.
• No sidewalks, pedestrian walkways, playgrounds, public parks, school grounds, or other public rec areas that are not a road.
• The driver and every occupant stay in a seat designed for passengers while the cart is moving. No riding in anyone's lap.
• Modified or speed-altered carts are not issued city golf cart plates. Carts must remain slow-moving vehicles.
• City plates and beach passes are calendar-year (January 1–December 31). A new plate is required each January 1.

Beach rules that affect carts

• The beach is treated as a city street.
• Posted beach driving speed limit is 15 mph.
• Driving in the dunes or vegetation is prohibited.
• Do not drive into the water — Gulf, bays, docks, shoreline, or deep puddles.
• Parking is only on the roadside of bollards where they are installed. Red-topped bollards mark no-parking zones.
• Motorized vehicles on the beach need a city beach parking permit. Confirm current fees and rules on the city's permit page.

City plate fees (not rental $)

The City's 2025 fee schedule lists a calendar-year golf cart registration and license plate at $50 for residents and $100 for non-residents, with a $25 replacement fee. Those are city government fees for people who register their own cart. They are not overnight rental widgets and they do not appear on this board.
